Frozen Moments

Whenever I see people idling on the roadside, waiting for a bus or even shopping for vegetables, I always wonder if they are even aware of what hits me painfully - precious moments of our life are slipping away forever and we have nothing to show for it. Time I believe is the most elusive of all our assets, the most unforgiving and the most irreversible. Thoughts like these haunt me everyday while sitting in an auto or while waiting at the post office. What can save us? I feel jealous of people whose mind has not crossed this thought since they live in blissful oblivion. There are yet others who argue that good can also be perceived as the absence of bad, and if you haven't been hurting anybody, you are doing ok, even if your time has been "wasted". Some others might yet argue that people like me cant appreciate the small happiness that comes from doing nothing at all, yet others will argue that there is fun in waiting at the bus stop. Somehow it never has been for me, and when I do these things, a terrible sense of restlessness hits me and I just am not able to shake it off. But then WHAT is a good investment of time? Spending time with your loved ones? Reading a good book? Taking a long walk? Painting a picture or listening to music? Volunteering or helping someone out? I guess when we rate all activities as a measure of how better or worse we couldve utilised the same time, and how unique or regular they are, life throws up an entirely different picture.

Eda,
Only Ambition and a true sense of direction towards your "Goals to Achieve" in life can save you. You are either confused or need a good direction to drive life or carrier. Focus is selecting best from the available opportunities. You need to focus on positive energy than think about general science of life. Do something that can make you stand apart from the crowd, instead of throwing question by question to the world. This is not going to be beneficial to you, but again to be dumped in a vaccum of darkness. Share some solutions instead of cribbing about the problem yaar..!!!

Ok, I completely disagree with the point above. Your question is relevant and has been explored by philosophers for ages - what is the purpose of existence? Is it to make maximum impact on this earth (beget children, make a difference to other people or is living itself the purpose? Is standing apart from the crowd any use? These questions are relevant and meaningful, and the "meaning" is not just to lead you towards a better understanding of life but also to a better understanding of thought itself.

Hi Shruthi,

Good Day..!!
Nobody is trying to prove anything is irrelevant here, just to clarify :-). Just curious if this was a question lingering in the minds of many bright and renowned intellects for centuries, why nobody's able to reach a pit stop for finding an answer. Well i solemnly feel there is no answer. The purpose of existence is just to exist. Purpose of life is to live and making a statement with your life is something else. This is perspective you inculcate to make a change, and that’s when you stand away from the crowd. If anybody continuous to still ask the same questions which were unanswered for centuries, then there is a high probability of these questions to remain as questions forever.

Food for thought: And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years -Abraham Lincoln

Well, this is what Ive been told by most people when I voice these thoughts. The forgone conclusion (if it is) of not finding an answer is hardly a reason to stop questioning :) And what makes it worthwhile is that all this reasoning leads us to dwell on and acknowledge things that we never might have otherwise, which I believe really makes us better people.

But then again, its all about what height you want you view things from :)

Interesting discussion. The problem - no one knows what "just existing" or "make a change" means. And the entire argument of standing away from the crowd depends rather heavily on your definition of what a crowd is, doesn't it? Which brings me to the next question - what is this crowd, exactly? People who live in South India? India? Asia? The world? What does this crowd do? Eat? Sleep? Make babies? Work? Think?

And asking questions and "existing" are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, empirical evidence shows that those who are the most successful (by conventional metric) are the ones that ask the most questions.

Veena, keep the questions going. They not only provoke thought, but help us define who we are.

Hugs,

Shruthi
